History

FICTION was founded in 1972 by Donald Barthelme and Mark Jay Mirsky to make fiction more accessible and provide an outlet for difficult, experimental, or unusual stories at a time when outlets interested in publishing quality fiction seemed few and far between.

Originally printed in a tabloid format and sold on street corners for 50¢, FICTION later transitioned into a yearly journal but not before experimenting with what our staff affectionately refer to a “piano sheet sized” format.

Why it Matters

Own a piece of literary history, support independent publishing, and help us clear space in storage to make room for the next generation of writers.

In the pages of these six piano sheet size issues readers will find gorgeous artwork, paired with more than 100 stories. Highlights include Alice Hoffman’s first ever published work of fiction, an early version of Donald Barthelme’s “The Sergeant,” and stories in translation from Marcha, an Uruguayan newspaper that the government banned in the 1970s.
