Twelve Terrors
I had a dream the Christmas Eve of my fourth year in which Santa Claus kidnapped my mother. He threw her into a pickup truck and drove off. I could see her face framed by the rear window, and her pounding fists. She wanted me to save her, but I couldn’t. This was all happening at the end of our driveway, where I often liked to sit and play with road gravel.
I woke early, sneaked out of bed in the dark, and peeked
